It is the summer of l952 and the Cold War in on. When a family crisis sends twelve-year-old Garrett Gentry to spend the summer in Purcell Station, Indiana, he has no idea what he is going to find. Clinging to the last year of his boyhood, Garrett discovers his family legacy in a town that is rich, not in material wealth, but in character and characters. Then one day in the basement of Slinker's General he stumbles onto something he wasn't supposed to see. That's when he realizes Purcell Station has some secrets to share.

In this heartwarming, coming-of-age story of 1950's innocence, compassion, redemption, and rebirth, Garret is grounded in the wisdom of his Baptist grandmother who says "Life is one trial after another to see who has the mettle to stand up and do the right thing."

Dale Glenn was born in Knox County, Indiana, where his family roots go back to the 1880's, and where this novel takes place. The son of educators, he grew up in a number of small Indiana towns much like Purcell Station. A graduate of Indiana University, he began his career as an English teacher at Speedway High School in Indianapolis. Later he became assistant principal and basketball coach at Huntingburg High School in southern Indiana. Since then he has lived in Bloomington where he has served as the principal at both University Middle School and Batchelor Middle School, and as an adjunct professor at Indiana University. He remains in Bloomington with his wife Teresa, a former teacher, and among their five children. He divides his time between there and his family farm near Vincennes. Although his writing credits include a number of nonfiction publications, this is his first novel.

Dale Glenn has produced a wonderful story. It's one of those books where you have a keen interest in what comes next, then almost want to slow down and not see your enjoyment in reading it come to an end.

"Purcell Station" allows the reader to experience a bit of what it was like in small town America in the early 1950's and especially in Southwestern, Indiana.

The characters are rich and interesting. The story moves along and has been well constructed. The reader can also find a few unexpected positive life lessons along the way.

Due to my own history and experiences, I anticipated enjoying "Purcell Station." It exceeded my expectations.

This would be a good book for young adult readers right on up through those of us old enough to recall the time period of this quality read.

Not sure if Mr. Glenn has another book project in the works. I would certainly encourage his efforts and anticipate any future books that he might author.

Purcell Station Dale Glenn 9781457519680 Books Reviews

I enjoyed reading PURCELL STATION. The plot brings alive an era when small towns shaped lives, particularly the life of its central character, a young boy from a small farm town facing difficulties in a new environment.

I liked the flow of the plot, the tie-ins later in the book with earlier characters and events (time-honored reader conventions are excellent), the flashbacks brought forward in the plot (the stop-off in Terre Haute and his parents' early history), and the consistent character development and character changes as the summer progresses, such as the changes in weight and height and developing muscles and skills.

An especially well-developed theme is on page 236, a discussion of seasons changing, which ties together the coming of age of the young main character.

All in all, PURCELL STATION is a thoroughly engaging read!
I am a small town Indiana girl. One of those small Indiana towns like Purcell Station. I went to the free movies by the rail road tracks with a blanket to put on the gravel and sit down, all children in front and parents behind us... And we went for ice cream afterwards! The ice cream parlor run by the "old maid sisters" that stayed open only on those summer evenings...I have such memories and they were captured and put to print. I could see those memories in my mind's eye, and listen to the sounds, feel the humid heat, smell those yards being mowed, all of it, I loved it... didn't want it to end but did want to know the "mystery" of it all!!! I grew up with a freedom to my young life that is not there today and I loved being reminded of it all with such eloquence... I want Dale Glenn to write another story for us to read.
Being from Knox County and knowing some local folklore and history, I was excited to get my copy of Purcell Station by Dale Glenn.

While reading the book, I was captivated and put visual people to each character represented in this story. I'm a baby boomer and still have strong ties to where I grew up on the farm although I have been away for many years. I stepped back in time with Garrett and enjoyed every inspiring adventure with each page.

This is a wonderful book that held my interest with each chapter. It is very well written and I hope there is another novel in the works. Anne R.S.
Perhaps one of the greatest compliments a novelist can receive is for the reader to express his/her desire for the book not to end – that the reader has become so involved with characters that they cease to be characters and become friends. Purcell Station brought back memories of a quieter, more simple life, and I enjoyed the trip back in time.

Thank you Dale Glen for writing Purcell Station.
Having briefly known the author at IU, I can really see where this book came from and I congratulate him for the wonderful job he did bringing my(our) childhood memories alive. I hope there is a sequel in the works.
I just returned from a very enjoyable visit to Purcell Station, Indiana. The visit was made through the memory of a very fine writer and story-teller, Dale Glenn. You will not find Purcell Station on current maps. At one time it was a thriving little community but people move on and times change and it is no more. The author spent time as a child in just such a place and paints a very real picture of the people who made the town a community.

For those who have lived in such a place, it will bring back many memories. For those who lived in a very different place, it will let you experience small-town life in the 1950s through the author's eyes. Anyone who enjoyed the cover illustrations of everyday life scenarios that Norman Rockwell created for The Saturday Evening Post will surely love this book.
Dale Glenn puts you in the summer of 1952 coming-of-age life of 12 year old Garrett, who is spending the summer living with his grandparents in this small southern Indiana town (Purcell Station). A calm and comfortable G-rated book for both young and old, Garrett is engaging and growing while making new friends, especially Skipper, and exploring strange doings. Escape your stress and complicated life with a glass of sweet tea and Garrett.
